Luke 6:23 – “Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.”
We usually think of hardship as something to endure with gritted teeth. Yet Jesus turns that thinking upside down. When ridicule or rejection comes because of our faith, He doesn’t tell us to simply hang on—He tells us to rejoice and even leap for joy. That sounds impossible until we remember why: suffering for Christ links us with the prophets of old who also bore insults for speaking God’s truth.
Matthew records the same teaching in a deeply personal way: “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake” (Matt. 5:11). Notice the direct address—“are ye.” Jesus is speaking to us individually. He reminds us that false accusations and slander are not signs of failure; they are part of following Him. After all, if they misrepresented Jesus Himself, why should we expect different treatment?
For many believers today, persecution shows up not in jail cells or beatings, but in ridicule from friends, rejection from family, or whispers behind the scenes. These wounds are real, yet Jesus calls them blessings. Why? Because they prove where our true citizenship lies, and they point us to a reward far greater than anything this world can offer.
And here’s the remarkable part: when the world expects us to respond in anger, grace steadies our hearts. Joy rises where bitterness should be. That joy is a witness in itself—it’s evidence that Christ sustains us with something deeper than circumstance.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to see trials through Your eyes. When I face ridicule or rejection for Your name, give me joy that cannot be shaken. Let my response reveal Your grace and point others to the hope that is only found in You. Amen.
